Self-Promotion - How To Do It Right

Today we’ll talk about shameless self-promotion. That’s right, not just promotion, or marketing. No, shameless self-promotion!
As we all know we are constantly bombarded with advertising, in every shape or form. If you are trying to copy what everyone else is doing, you can bet you or your business won’t get any attention.
Self-promotion comes in many forms and you can use different tactics to get your name out there.
Sometimes self-promotion has a negative connotation, but we all self promote! Did you raise your hand in class to show the teacher you knew the answer? Of course! That’s self-promotion. This is the kind of self-promotion we are talking about. It’s self-promotion with dignity, class and the actual knowledge to back it up. If you self-promote only to prove you don’t really know what you’re talking about, you’re going to lose business. Natural self-promoters are the former.
So let’s look at the three major traits these self-promoters have and how they use them to build their brand and their businesses.
Self-Promotion Key #1: Positioning
It’s important that you position yourself around people who can make a difference in your life. This is something you have to constantly do. You need to wake up every morning and ask yourself “Who can I meet today who will make a difference in my success?” If you want to take it a step further, you can write it in big, red letters on your bathroom mirror.
In the same context you also want to consider who can help you meet your goals? Is it a prospective customer or client? A colleague with key contacts? Or an association with key members who may become prospects?
It’s convenient for us to interact and associate with the people who are easy to access. But in order to bring our business to the next level we need to reach outside our comfort zone. Once we do that we will see that there is a wealth of new connections waiting for us who will support us in our endeavors.
Self-Promotion Key #2: Style
The second major trait is style. No, this doesn’t mean you need a top of the line Hugo Boss suit to bring in more business. What this really means is how are you different from your competitors and others in your industry. How are you unique? What makes you memorable with customers?
If you are meeting a lot of people and they don’t remember you once you leave the room, you have a serious problem! This means you have an opportunity to present yourself in a more memorable way.
Remember that creating your uniqueness is not necessarily what you do to a product or service. It's is what you do to the mind of a prospect. Unless your business is clearly differentiated from its competitors in ways that are meaningful to customers, you will continue to compete on price. And this will absolutely stifle the growth of your business.
There are lots of little subtle changes you can make. Reassess your:
Maybe even, your hairstyle (of course, now we’re back to the expensive suit, but it really works!)
You get the idea. There are lots of little ways you can work on making your image and business more successful. For example you may want to consider how you sound on the phone or how you great people at meetings or other events. Does your elevator pitch need a makeover?
Self-Promotion Key #3: Repetition
The third trait of natural promoters is repetition. You can’t say it once and leave it at that. Successful self-promoters say it as many times as they need until they get a response. Would you remember a commercial for Coca-Cola if you only saw it once, no! You see it over and over and eventually you head out to the store to buy some.
In the same way you also have to make multiple impressions on those you are networking with in order to build awareness about you and your brand. Repetition goes hand in hand with positioning and style. Once you find people to network with, reach out and find 10, 20 or 30 more who can help in your success as well.
