An Effective Exercise To Transform Your Status Quo


As a coach and consultant I am hired for one bottom line reason – to improve my client’s condition. Obviously the only way that is going to happen is through change. There are very elaborate models on how to facilitate change, for individuals, teams, and organizations. Before you invest a lot of time and energy into these processes I want to share with you a very simple model that you can try for yourself.

The process has four steps to it:

  1. Accept the reality of your current situation

  2. Create an urgent case for action

  3. Clearly identify which habits you are going to change

  4. Create accountability

Step One - Accept The Reality Of Your Current Situation

The first step is to get crystal clear what your situation actually is. Just recently I had a client who hired me because he wanted to get more organized. Even though he had some sense that he was not very productive, he was shocked when he found out how severe his situation really was. At our first meeting we reviewed a couple of his previous work days and determined that out of a full workday he had only worked a little more than 2 hours. Everything else he did was just busy work, procrastination, unimportant tasks and flat out wasting time on the internet, talking to colleagues etc.

He also discovered that he had absolutely no strategy, or objectives to which he was accountable to. Again, when he hired me he had some sense of his situation, but he had no idea as to its severity. This was quite a wake up call for him.

Step Two – Create An Urgent Case For Action

Even though it was very uncomfortable for him to acknowledge his current situation, it served as a powerful catalyst to create an urgent case for action. Before our first session he was interested in becoming more productive, now he was committed. He could clearly see that if he continued the way he did, his future would not look bright nor would it be satisfying in the slightest. He then developed an urgent case for action, which is a simple statement that essentially answers the question that is always in the background, “why should I do something about this NOW?” Once he could see where he would end up if he didn’t make a change now, he had a very clear and distinct choice in front of him.

Step Three - Clearly Identify What You Are Going To Change

The third step is to then clearly identify what specifically needed to change. In the case of my client one thing we identified was that more structure was needed. We created a comprehensive Marketing Strategy, with specific tasks and deliverables. He created a more structured workday and identified specific daily routines that would help him stay focused.

Another powerful action step he decided to take was to start talking to his wife and establish new goals together. They had goals in the past, but over time became lax about pursuing them with passion and that was a major contributor for him to become lax and unmotivated in his work.

Step Four – Constantly Hold Yourself Accountable To Your New Standards

The fourth step is to start to hold yourself accountable to your new standards – the things you said you wanted to change. This is where the rubber meets the road. Discipline is important. Your chances of success are much higher if you measure your progress. For example, measure your sales activities; keep track of how well you are doing with implementing your daily routines.

I suggest that this four-step process be the first exercise you do to create new habits. Reconnecting with your goals is powerful and often times exactly what is needed to establish more productive habits and routines.

However, sometimes there are deeper-rooted beliefs, feelings or patterns that subconsciously cause us to operate in certain ways. There are ways to address these deeper core issues, which I will address in future posts. In the meantime try this exercise and see how powerful the results can be!
