What I Learned About Making Excuses
Isn’t it interesting that even though we all know that making excuses is detrimental to our success, we still make them every day? Some of us are aware that we make them, some of us not yet. A big part of the journey to success is to change the habit of making excuses.
Two things that all excuses have in common are that they keep us from doing and achieving what we truly want. They also have a tendency to expand in every aspect of our lives. If we start making excuses in one area, we can be sure we start making them in other areas. That means, we have to change the habit of making excuses right now, or it’s just going to get worse. In fact many studies show that the more we make excuses, the more they become embedded in our sub-consciousness. Which means we start to believe they are true.
The reason why I am writing this post is because I just had an experience myself, where I was making excuses rather than taking proactive actions. Last year I made a commitment to participate in several seminars this year that will help me in my own transformation and growth as a coach.
Leading up to this first seminar I started to feel very anxious about what it would take to free up my time in order for me to participate. My mind was full with excuses like:
Now is not the right time. There are other things I need to focus on.
It will be too complicated to arrange my schedule.
I would fall behind on other things and it will cause stress.
Finally, after talking to a close friend of mine about my situation I realized that I was looking at the situation from a completely wrong perspective.
The truth is that I not only have made a commitment to myself to participate in these seminars, but that I absolutely love and believe in the work and movement that happens there. It is a critical part of my personal growth and growth as a coach.
Now, instead of using my mind to come up with all the excuses, I started focusing on how I can make it happen. And once I made the decision, and started to take action steps towards it, things started to fall in place. It’s amazing how much creative energy is caught up in making excuses!
Once you direct that energy towards solving the problem in front of you, rather than justifying why it is there you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.

I know I am still very much at the beginning of my journey to truly understand this quote in its depth. But this week I definitely took a big step towards it.
As I am starting to study the lives of successful people one thing I am learning is that all these successful people had plenty of opportunity to make excuses and essentially stop their endeavor. But they didn’t and often times that is the only thing that made the difference.
Here are some things that are important as you continue on your journey of not letting excuses stop you:
Surround yourself with people who hold you accountable to your highest goals.
Never underestimate your power to change yourself. Never overestimate your power to change yourself. – Wayne Dyer
Accept the law of cause and effect. Take a second look at what appears to be someone’s good luck. You’ll find not luck, but preparation, planning and success-producing thinking preceded his or her fortune.
Don’t be a wishful thinker. Don’t waste your mental muscles dreaming of an effortless way to achieve success. We don’t become successful simply through luck. Success comes from doing those things and mastering those principles that produce success. Don’t count on luck, for promotions, victories the good things in life. Concentrate on developing those qualities in yourself that will make you a winner.
Most importantly: Start today. Start small and keep it simple.
